I encountered this problem using a VPN with PPTP. I tried the solutions but the main ones did not work.
First vpn fixes
This list is what Microsoft says to do. Microsoft- Error 734: The PPP Link Control Protocol Was Terminated
- In the connections properties
- Network Tab > Settings
- Uncheck - Negotiate multi-link for single link connections
- In vpn connections main properties
- Security tab
- Check - Allow unsecured password
Although these were solutions that Microsoft offers, these did not work for me.
Second VPN fix
This is the fix that worked for me Technet- Error 734: The PPP Link Control Protocol Was Terminated
- In the connections properties
- Security tab
- Choose Advanced Custom Settings
- Click settings
- Uncheck everything except MS-CHAP v2
