With all common routers, standard settings allow anyone to access your internet connection, and your computers on your network. WEP or encryption is a technology used to protect your network from invaders.\r\n\r\nThis guide is for most Linksys routers. It shows how to enable WEP protection on your network.\r\n\r\n\r\nOpen IE, or firefox using the stadard icon\r\nin the address bar, type 192.168.1.1\r\nleave the username blank, and the password "admin"\r\n\r\nYou are now logged into your routers configuration.\r\nMake sure you are on the main page of the routers webpage interface.\r\nSetup your wireless networks name i.e. ComputerShack, or your last name.\r\nClick the Wireless category, then "Wireless Security", a new link that shows up under it.\r\nFor "Security Mode" select WEP\r\nFor WEP encryption type, 128 bit.\r\nEnter a password and click the generate button\r\nmake sure the key number changes when you press generate the first time.\r\nThere are 4 keys which you can choose from:0,1,2,3. These different passcodes or keys are important, so remember which Key# you choose (just pick one).\r\nClick "Save Settings"\r\nYour router now has a password on it to keep intruders out of it.\r\n\r\n\r\nNow, each computer on the network must be enabled to access your router.\r\n\r\n***Make sure you followed the first set of instructions***\r\nClick Start>Settings>Network Connections\r\nRight click your wireless connection, and click properties.\r\nIn the new window, click the tab for "Encryption"\r\nClick the Encryption information, and select WEP.\r\nFor the KEY NUMBER section, pick which key you used for the encryption key, and select the key index according to which key number you selected in your router setup (1=0, 2=1. 3=2. 4=3) and type in the wireless key for your key number (using 1-9 A-F as possible characters). It will look like a bunch of random numbers and letters.\r\nSave your settings then repeat this step for your other computers. Do not share your keycode with anyone.\r\n\r\n\r\nIf all else fails and you decide to go back to UNPROTECTED, hold the reset button on the back of your router for 10 seconds.'
