Network File Sharing

[/u][/b]\r\nPage 1\r\n[size=9](Skill Level:) [color=yellow]Intermediate[/color][/size]\r\n[/center]\r\n\r\n\r\n This guide will teach you how to share your files, folders, and printers across a network. Drive sharing can be dangerous. If you don't know what you are doing, you can give people access to your files and data. Make sure you follow this guide [b]exactly [/b]in order to share your drives and printers on a network.\r\n\r\n[u][b][center]Terms:[/u][/b][/center]\r\n[b]Server[/b] - the computer hosting the data/printer to share\r\n[b]Client[/b] - the computer accessing the data/printer\r\n[b]Local[/b]- On the computer where the user is\r\n[b]Remote[/b]- On the Server computer, where the user is not at\r\n[b]Sharing[/b]- Allowing network computers to access your computer resources\r\n[b]Mapping[/b] - Makes the Client think a certain Shared folder is Local\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n[u][b][center]Before you start:[/u][/b][/center]\r\nMake sure the Client, and Server computer are using the same Workgroup name.\r\nRight click "My Computer" and go to properties\r\nGo to the computer name category\r\n
\r\n[b]Make sure you take note of your:[/b]\r\n[b]FULL COMPUTER NAME and WORKGROUP[/b]\r\n\r\n\r\n[center][b]You need your workgroup to match on your client, and server. Network File Sharing

Sharing folders:

[/center][/b][/u]\r\nOpen My Computer and right click the Hard Drive or Folder you want to share\r\nGo to the Sharing and Security option on the popup\r\n\r\nFrom here, click "I understand the risks...." as we discussed those before\r\nYou can now either run a file sharing WIZARD or do it manually\r\n [blockquote]If you choose to manually enable sharing, just name the folder you want others to see it as and either choose to let others change your files, or to allow them just to read your files.[/blockquote] \r\nClick ok and your drive will be shared. (You may need to restart)\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n[u] [b][center]

Sharing Printers:

[/b][/center] [/u]\r\nStart > Control Panel\r\nPrinters and Faxes\r\nRight click your printer and go to "sharing"\r\nSelect "Share this printer" \r\nUse the default name, and click OK\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNext: Accessing the shared folders/printers\r\n\r\n[newpage=Accessing Shared Drives and Printers]\r\n\r\n [center][b][u]

Network File Sharing

To access Network Files or Folders:

[/u][/b][/center]\r\nOn the Client machine\r\nStart > Run > \\computername\ \r\n(replace computer name with the Server computer name)\r\n\r\nLet the computer access the shared drives and printers on the server......\r\nWhen the new windows opens up: \r\n\r\nTo just get the files, navigate to the files in the new window\r\n\r\nTo save a shortcut to a folder, or choose a network printer as your main:\r\nRight click the printer you want to use, and set as default\r\nRight click the network folders you want to share and click "Map Network Drive"\r\n\r\n[center][b]This makes the Servers drive automatically list on the clients "My Computer"[/b][/center]
